Which AI chatbot do AI engines recommend? ChatGPT named itself

Original measurement by Vincent Wesley Couey · 8 live AI engines · snapshot June 19 to July 8, 2026 · from The AI Recommendation Audit (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20767878, CC-BY).

The short answer: a near-tie, with a twist. We asked 8 AI engines for the best AI chatbot. Four named ChatGPT, three named Dialogflow, and one named Chatbase, so ChatGPT edges the blended score 8.0 to 7.7. The twist is twofold: ChatGPT named itself, and the split falls almost perfectly along age. The newer, web-grounded engines picked ChatGPT; the older memory-based engines picked Dialogflow, Google's legacy chatbot-building framework.

The amber line is ChatGPT naming itself. But Gemini and Perplexity independently named ChatGPT too, so the grounded consensus is real. Violet = memory, cyan = grounded.

What each engine named

Same question for all eight: the best AI chatbot. The pattern is an age line. The three pure legacy memory engines named Dialogflow; every grounded engine, plus one memory engine, named ChatGPT, including ChatGPT itself.

Why the answer splits on age, and what the self-pick means

Two things are happening. First, "AI chatbot" is an ambiguous category, it can mean a conversational assistant like ChatGPT or a platform for building customer-facing bots like Dialogflow, and the engines split partly on which they pictured. Second, there is a clean age line: the three legacy memory models reach for Dialogflow, the builder that dominated for years, while the grounded models and the newest weights name ChatGPT, the tool that reset the category.

Legacy memory engines

Dialogflow, the builder

Three memory models named Dialogflow, Google's framework for structured intent-and-flow chatbots. It is what "chatbot tool" meant in the training data these models learned from, so it is what they reach for.

Newer + grounded engines

ChatGPT, the assistant

Every grounded engine named ChatGPT, and so did ChatGPT itself. The self-pick is worth noting, but it is not lone vanity: Gemini and Perplexity, direct competitors, also named ChatGPT rather than themselves.

The self-reference is a real quirk to watch as AI tools start recommending AI tools, a model has an obvious incentive to name itself. The check is exactly what this audit does: measure across many independent engines, so one model's self-pick cannot pass as consensus.

The full AI-chatbot leaderboard

Blended across all 8 engines, ChatGPT and Dialogflow sit neck and neck at the top, with a clear gap back to the dedicated bot-builders (ManyChat, Microsoft Bot Framework) and the rest.

Two answers, two definitions, and a self-interest flag. If you want a model to talk to or build on, the grounded engines say ChatGPT; if you want to build a structured customer-support bot, the legacy engines' Dialogflow (or ManyChat, Landbot) is the real category. And note the pattern for the future: as AI models increasingly recommend AI tools, watch for self-preference, the fix is to trust the cross-engine consensus, not any single model's pick.

What to do with a self-referential answer

If you are buying: decide what you actually mean by chatbot first. For a conversational model to use or build on, ChatGPT is the grounded consensus. For a customer-facing support or marketing bot with intents and flows, that is Dialogflow, ManyChat, or Landbot, a genuinely different purchase. Do not let one ambiguous query blur two markets.

If you sell a chatbot-building tool: the assistants are eating the top of the answer, so anchor on the job they do not do, structured, branded, on-site customer bots. Be specific and frequent in the live web about that use case so the grounded engines name you for it, rather than defaulting to the assistant that shows up for every AI query.

Questions people ask

Which AI chatbot do AI engines recommend in 2026?

A near-tie: 4 of 8 named ChatGPT, 3 named Dialogflow, 1 named Chatbase. ChatGPT edges the blend 8.0 to 7.7. Newer grounded engines picked ChatGPT; older memory engines picked Dialogflow.

Did ChatGPT recommend itself?

Yes, ChatGPT named ChatGPT. But Gemini and Perplexity, competitors, also named ChatGPT rather than themselves, so the grounded consensus around it is genuine, not just self-preference.

ChatGPT or Dialogflow for a chatbot?

Different needs. ChatGPT is a conversational assistant to use or build on; Dialogflow is a platform for structured customer-facing bots. Grounded engines lean ChatGPT; memory engines name Dialogflow. Pick by whether you want a model or a bot-building platform.

Method and honesty note

This is original measurement, part of The AI Recommendation Audit 2026 (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20767878, CC-BY). Across 16 B2B and GTM software categories we put the same buying question to 8 live AI engines (Llama 3.3 via Groq, Cohere Command-A, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite grounded, Perplexity, ChatGPT GPT-5, Llama 4 Scout, GPT-OSS 120B, Qwen 3.6), snapshot captured June 19 to July 8, 2026. This page reports the AI chatbots category. The self-reference (ChatGPT naming ChatGPT) is reported as measured. AI answers are volatile; this is a dated snapshot, re-run the published protocol to reproduce it.
